New Year’s Resolutions: Implementing the power of FOCUS

New Year’s Resolutions can be so fantastic, and they can also be very dangerous! Fantastic when they come off, dangerous when all they do is make you feel like a constant failure because you never seem to do what you said you would. The stigma attached to New Year’s Resolutions and goals in general (ie: “why set them when I’ll probably fail anyway?”) robs people of their ability to strive for the very best and realise their potential.

This year, I encourage you to implement the power of FOCUS, which can be abbreviated to:

F = Follow

O = One

C = Course

U = Until

S = Successful

The discipline of sticking to one path

If you can set ONE health goal for 2012 and continue on the road to achieving it without giving up, you are very likely to achieve it. What stops most people in their tracks when it comes to New Year’s Resolutions and other goals is the feeling that temporary failure lasts forever. For example, have you ever gone on a diet, commanding you will lose 10kg, only to find yourself “slipping up” somewhere along the line? You might find yourself out for dinner eating something indulgent, or in a moment of weakness “driving through” McDonalds, only to then label yourself a failure and giving up on the goal. In these instances, it’s important to remember it’s not whether you fall down, but whether you get back up that counts. Too many people in the world fall down, and stay down, and then continue to talk themselves down for the rest of their lives. One tip: we all fall down! Every single one of us makes mistakes, every baby falls over whilst learning how to crawl, and always gets back up! We have all been babies in our lives! A wonderful goal for many of us in 2012 could be to be more child-like in our approach to life?!

So the lesson here is to recognise that whatever goal you set for yourself in 2012, remind yourself in advance that it is highly likely you will make mistakes, and in knowing that, you promise to get back up and continue on the path you have outlined for yourself to achieve the fulfilment  of reaching your goal!

THE FIVE ESSENTIALS TO ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS IN 2012

  1. 1.    Write your goal down. The very act of writing down your goal means you have to think about what your goal is.
  2. 2.    Write down your plans for achieving your goal. Start by writing down all the things you need to do in order to reach your goal, then prioritise what needs to be done  in January.
  3. 3.    Read your goal every morning and every night at a MINIMUM. Tip: Place your written goal on your bedside table and/or in your wallet/purse.
  4. 4.    Schedule your plans into your diary. If you don’t have a diary, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND (urge!) getting one.
  5. 5.    Measure at the end of each day and/or week how you’re progressing .You can’t manage what you don’t measure.

GOAL ACHIEVEMENT IS USELESS IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE HEALTH TO ENJOY IT

And remember, having you spine checked regularly for misalignments / subluxation ensures your body, mind and soul will be functioning at its best, and healthy dreams and goals have a habit of finding their way to the healthiest and most energetic people on the planet. Choose health and vibrant energy in 2012 and it will choose you! Go for it!
